2nd Hole - Colonel Davenport

2nd Hole - Colonel Davenport

PAR 5 - 561 Yards

Only a perfect tee shot will allow the above average player to have a go at the green in 2. Using a short iron for your 2nd shot to lay up short of the water on the left & the bunker on the right will leave you with an easier approach.
"A downhill tee shot to a fairway some 50 ft below makes this hole play shorter than its listed length. Spectacular view from the tee box to the River ahead of you looks like a postcard. A good drive down the left side close to the bunker & you'll have a shot at reaching in 2. If you play it as a 3-shotter, the secondary landing area is lay up friendly. The entrance to the green is tight & is guarded by a wetland left, bunkers & a strand of trees right. The small 2-tiered green was designed to make pinpoint accuracy a must."
--Course Architect D.A. Weibring

History

The Quad Cities is made up of cities on both the Iowa & Illinois sides of the Mississippi River. 1 of them, Davenport, IA, is named after George Davenport, the area's 1st settler & co-founder of the city.

Col. Davenport was attacked & murdered in his home on July 4, 1845 by a gang of outlaws known as "The Banditti of the Prairie." Rumor has it that the bandits fled from Rock Island & took shelter in the barn whose foundation is still visible behind the 2nd green. From here they made their escape using the Rock River ferry crossing. A $1500 reward & the help of detective Edward Bonney - finally "did in" the bandits. They were all captured & brought to trial by the end of October that same year.
