5th Hole - Lincoln's Crossing

5th Hole - Lincoln's Crossing

PAR 4 - 433 Yards

A difficult par 4, it is important that your tee shot be placed in the left side of the fairway. Take aim at the 2nd fairway bunker & the natural slope of the fairway will leave you in perfect position for the next shot. Any shots to the right will leave you negotiating around tree limbs.
"A long, straight drive down the left side of the fairway is a must on this hole. Trees guard the right side on your second shot & the green sits behind a ravine that is loaded with bunkers & is guarded on all sides by trees. Hit this green in regulation or pay the price. The bunkers in front will see plenty of action on right side hole locations."
--Course Architect D.A. Weibring

History

The 1st bridge constructed across the Mississippi River joined Davenport & the Rock Island Arsenal by rail in 1856. Just 2 weeks after its opening, hostility between the river & rail interests peaked.

The steamboat "Effie Afton" hit a bridge pier, setting both the bridge & the boat on fire. The steamboat company charged that the bridge was an obstruction; the rail interests blamed the incident on carelessness. The case was eventually resolved in favor of the railroad company by the US Supreme Court, thanks to the efforts of a young attorney.

The bridge between No. 5 green & No. 6 tee honors that 1st crossing of the Mississippi River - and that attorney, Abraham Lincoln.
